International tv trends
Every year European Producers present the international main TV Trends in China. It is always interesting to get in touch with the producers of the national main Chinese broadcaster. Jens Hoffmann - JHI Productions-, thinks that for a better comprehension of the current new programming trends, it is important to have a break and glance at the few past seasons since the big bang that has been i.e. Big Brother. It has disrupted international TV landscapes, encouraging broadcasters and producers to show twice more creativity and imagination in all fields: entertainment, fiction and factual. First effect: a rising competition with an ever-increasing number of new shows ( Growthrate 60%) There was a time for the big hit for the reality TV: Survivor, PopStars, Idols, Starmaker, Temptation Island, The Bachelor… amongst many other hits. Almost each time a new format was launched, it ignited ratings. The reality TV had to renew itself with new concepts. Ingredient for raising the success is again: celebrities (I am a celebrity, get me out of here!, Celebrity Farm). Then came twists (My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé), makeover (The Swan, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition), swapping (Wife Swap) and finally coaching (Supernanny). In the same time, docu soap and docu drama managed to impose themselves in prime time, and boosted up the whole documentary genre. Fiction stroke back with top ratings drama such as Lost or Desperate Housewives which have become international hits within a few months. Paranormal and Sci-Fi drama had assailed American but also European channels (Medium, Invasion, Afterlife…). On the other hand, the reality TV formats have definitely failed to reach ratings of its beginning. One exception: Strictly Come Dancing which has managed to build international strong ratings within a few months only. If coaching experts had become viewers’ personal counsellors, it happens they are sometimes left behind. Nevertheless, game shows and variety shows are still on, the season of hybrid formats flirting between variety, game shows and reality as well. Dogs eats dogs food.

China TV - Jens Hoffmann, Asia Pacific
The China tv market is different and for Europeans often strange. Nowadays China has cracked down on reality shows, in a fresh drive to clean up what domestic viewers can watch on their TV screens. But the surge in audiences watching competition-based reality tv suggests that the moral crusade will face opposition not just from viewers but also dissenting voices in China's media industry.
