Business in Asia, berlinstartup.de Asia-Pacific, Jens Hoffmann
Shanghai seems to be the future city No.1, seems to be a place of growth in today’s China.Despite all the development, Shanghai’s western-style infrastructure, particularly tangible ones, unfortunately seem mostly superficial and symbolic at this stage.
In the near future Shanghai could be as international and city as Hong Kong; but today, Hong Kong still has got a very, very comfortable lead over her twin sister, and unless something goes critically wrong in Hong Kong, it is in fact a long shot for Shanghai to overcome Hong Kong—in quality (in a western or international sense), if not in quantity—any time soon.
One of the surprises in Shanghai was a far smaller presence of foreigners (probably except for Japanese), relative to Hong Kong. Certainly, there must be many foreigners in some areas of the city, but they are not very visible, or not as visible as in Hong Kong. From that, I sort of derived a temporary assumption that Shanghai—and China—is probably not yet well understood, to the degree similar to Hong Kong, by the outside world.
