Centuries later, after the First Opium War, Shanghai was opened to western trade as one of the treaty ports under the Treaty of Nanjing, which also ceded Hong Kong to the United Kingdom as a formal colony, and the twins started parallel development; one as an international city, and the other as a British colony. But it was Shanghai that led the development and became the biggest financial city in the Far East by 1927, partly because Hong Kong suffered from an epidemic of bubonic plague that started in Guangdong during the 1890s and lasted for the next 30 years.
Later, the twins had to face another invasion, this time from Japan. Shanghai was lost to the Japanese forces in the Battle of Shanghai in 1937. Four years later, Hong Kong was attacked a day after the famous Pearl Harbor, and surrendered shortly on Dec. 25, 1941.
