After the war, it was now Hong Kong’s turn to lead the rebirth under the British, but it was no way trouble-free. Although many businesses left Shanghai for Hong Kong after 1949, Hong Kong itself came under the influence of the Cultural Revolution. In 1967, a nasty labor movement rocked the city. On the contrary, by the 1960s, Shanghai itself has become an industrial center within China, and by the early 1980s, it was contributing 70-80 percent of the entire national tax revenue.
