I was struck by two additional, much bigger surprises during my Shanghai stay. The first one is positive. The extent of Shanghai’s tangible development was far more than what I expected. Advanced technological infrastructure is already there. My mobile phone worked in Shanghai (whereas my NY cellphone does not work even in some parts of the United States). High-speed Internet connection is available. There are many big universities in Shanghai. For example Fudan University, where President Reagan gave a speech when he visited Shanghai in the 1980s.
