New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, and to some extent London and other financial centers actually had no other choice but to become a financial center because of its limited physical resources. Yet, being so big and populous, Shanghai is not like other established financial centers, and if it focuses too much on financial center status, it could become another Tokyo, a very hollow city, which is practically not capable of sustaining its vast population productively.
Here is what people recommend for Shanghai. Shanghai’s development is nowhere near its completion. And it is a good thing, because it can still choose a correct path to a successful future. The central theme is, “Don’t become another Tokyo.”
