Google has also been working with domain registrar Dot Arai to distribute applications such as Google Docs and Spreadsheets to government agencies and SMEs. Some 450 Thai schools are already using Google Apps in a pilot project with the Ministry of Education, according to Google's Thailand country representative Pornthip Kongchun.
The company was also looking at partnerships here, such as the one it has with Sanook! - which is "a good indicator of other kinds of partnerships that we could form.
The Sanook! partnership was an Adsense for search deal.
This means that Google powered the search at Sanook.com "like 'Google inside', to use the Intel analogy, where we provide the search and ads off the back of the search for people using that portal", he said. "We're pretty keen to partner with locals in all sectors, not just marketing and advertising, but also the government, to make sure that Thailand has everything it needs to do really well on the international stage that is the Internet," he said, noting that a lot of companies would start to invest in their own online marketing teams. That was "certainly something that we would encourage as well," he said.

Typically, Google would see large corporations with their own online marketing teams working in partnership with their advertising agency or specialist for search, he said, adding that then they would start to invest in online marketing. He also suggested that Thailand should find ways to increase its deployment of broadband Internet, noting that from Google's research it was "still relatively low." But it is growing, he added, noting that "when you look at Southeast Asia, some countries are really forging ahead, and I think it's probably one of the areas the government will probably want to take close look at, and to start thinking 'how broadband is going ... and what can we do to really accelerate it?'
"It might sound like it really isn't that important, but what you find with broadband is that once a home or an office has it, you then go to the concept of always on, it's always accessible, and the interaction and usability becomes that much stronger. And the tools of production, the cost of video, and so on, are cheap; people can now contribute content at very low cost. That adds to the amount of data out there. And, of course your own data being stored out there in the 'cloud' is an enormous benefit in the sense that it means you don't have to have a notebook, if you drop your laptop, it doesn't matter ... having your data out there is quite useful," he said.
Kimber noted that as Google saw the Internet take off in a country, so it would focus more on that market. "We are very keen to develop more applications for Thailand. It's definitely on our list," he said. "For us Thailand is a key market, and we're seeing a very, very rapid acceleration in search queries and it's one of the faster-growing Southeast Asia markets and it is right up there in terms of our focus. So, it's certainly an area we're going to invest a lot more in and both from a product side and from monetisation and advertising," he said.
Search was "not a solved problem" for Google, pointing out that there were many different pieces of data coming onto the Internet every day, so the size of the index was growing.
Google, whose founding mission statement "organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful" had stood the test of time, and was still relevant 10 years on, has been looking at all the different formats of information, adding new capabilities. These included book search, while Google was also looking to digitise new forms of content and was exploring picture search, music search and video search.
