Bangkok Travel Basics
Taxis are everywhere and , they’re cheap (use the meter). A ride within Bangkok rarely costs more than 100 baht, or about $3. If you don’t speak Thai it’s always good to know your final destination.Rarely will a Bangkok taxi driver be able to read words in the Latin alphabet. If you don’t have anything written down in Thai, stretch out the pronunciation of the word. Some difficult words: The Oriental hotel is pronounced: Oree-en-TEN. Central department store: Centraan. Also, many streets are named after kings of the current dynasty. In English they are known as Rama I, Rama II, Rama III, and so on. In Thai it’s “Pra Ram” followed by the number. Finally, 3pm or 4pm is when almost all taxi drivers, who work 12-hour days, end/begin their shift, so you might encounter a lot of drivers who refuse a ride in a direction that doesn’t suit them. You can use the mass transit: The elevated BTS and underground MRT are run by different companies so you need to buy separate tickets if you’re going to ride both. You can buy single ride tickets or pre-paid cards that get deducted with each ride. The mass transit system has transformed the city: you’re not beholden to Bangkok traffic jams, the air conditioning is reliably cool and Thais are generally considerate and polite mass transit riders. If you plan on using the trains, consider reserving a hotel near one of the stations. Last trains for the BTS and MRT are just before midnight. Traffic usually lightens up a bit after 8pm, though, so might as well take a taxi at those hours. Bangkok is food heaven, of course. Three very nice choices: Blue Elephant (233 South Sathorn Road. Skytrain: Surasak station. Classic Thai food. Set in an old, pretty mansion that was Thailand’s first department store. They have a cooking school and branches in London, Paris and other capitals. Baan Kanitha (36/1 Sukhumvit Soi 23. Another charming old Thai house with a menu filled with classic Thai dishes.
