Rang Mahal (26th Floor Rembrandt Hotel, 19 Sukhumvit Soi 18. Don’t be put off by the location. The Rembrandt is a middling, forgettable hotel but Rang Mahal is one of the best Indian restaurants in Asia. The tandoori chicken is fabulous. Ask for a table beside the windows — great view of the Bangkok skyline. Sport: Not recommended for the middle of the day unless you really want to sweat, but Bangkok’s charming Lumpini Park is a great place to stroll, jog or people watch. Morning tai chi makes for great entertainment as do the mass evening sessions of aerobics – if that’s what you call hundreds of office workers gyrating to technopop. If you’re traveling with kids, the giant monitor lizards that navigate the lake and lumber across the lawns are lots of fun.
Internet: If you’re used to the fast internet connections in places such as Hong Kong, Singapore, the U.S. or some parts of Europe, internet in Thailand will be disappointing. Every decent hotel will have internet connections but download speeds are slow. Fine for e-mail and casual web-browsing but allow lots of time if you’re downloading or sending big files. Video streaming is generally unreliable. Hotel connections are usually good enough for Skype, though. And this of course is one of the best ways to get around crazy telephone fees at hotels. Also, if you’re staying for a while you might want to buy a pre-paid GSM phone chip that will give you access to a local number. Ask the hotel concierge where you can get one. But if you’re in the Siam Square neighborhood the massive floor of mobile telephone vendors at MBK shopping mall is impressive. Charmingly, telephone numbers are priced according to their desirability.
